Challenge: You’re Arrogant!

For the challenge this week, here’s a question posted on Yahoo Answers (with some slight editing for readability):

How can Christians be so arrogant and claim that their way is the only way? And no, not all religions are like this. The Abrahamic religions are predators. Asian religions are open to many different ideologies and multiple beliefs, and we often mix them together. We Asian religions never claim to be absolute because no man truly knows about the afterlife, a dead man has never re-risen.

Religion is very much a part of cultural identity and heritage, so how can there be just one way!!

Is it arrogant to say that Jesus is the only way? Are you insulting other cultures and heritages when you say He is? How would you answer this charge? We’re looking forward to hearing your ideas! As usual, Brett will respond on Thursday.

  1. Does he think he’s right? If he does, then he thinks that our claim that Jesus is the only way is untrue. How can he, by his own logic, be so arrogant as to claim that he’s right and we’re wrong?

Strangely, he says Asian religions never claim to be absolute and don’t know the afterlife, then makes the absolute claim that dead men don’t rise from the dead.

Asian religions are open to multiple ideologies and beliefs? I wonder how many of those religions would accept my claim that there is no reincarnation and karma is an illusion…

  2. I’d start with the Columbo tactic on this one and ask, “What do you mean by arrogant?” My guess is the conversation would go something like this:

Me: “What do you mean by arrogant?”

Critic: “You think you can go around and tell people that your beliefs are right and theirs are wrong. That’s disrespectful and can’t possibly be true.”

Me: “So you think my own beliefs and my beliefs about other religions are wrong?”

    Critic: “Yes.”

Me: “Then why are you being so arrogant as to tell me so?”

Clearly his own statement is self-refuting.

Next, his conclusions do not follow from his premises. Just because religions are very important to culture and heritage it doesn’t follow that they are all true. It was once believed that the earth was the center of the universe. There was even a time when people were burned at the stake for professing otherwise. However, sincerity of belief and cultural relevance did not change the fact that the earth is not the center of the universe.

Also, I don’t think he really has an adequate understanding of Asian religions. Take Buddhism for example. Buddha in fact began his religion under the pretense that it had been revealed to him that Hinduism was inaccurate. True, over time what many Asians did was take elements from many different religions and philosophies (Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, etc. etc.) and mushed them together into pluralistic religions. However, if you talked to the individuals who founded these religions in their original forms, they all would have told you that theirs is the only correct religion.

By the law of non-contradiction, all religions simply can’t be true. When we die do we go to heaven? Get reincarnated? Pass on to some sort of other universe? Nirvana? These ideas cannot be true at the same time.

Am I arrogant? I don’t think so. I’m just pointing out that we only have two options here. Either we’re all wrong or one of us is correct. However, we can be certain that we are not all correct because this is true by necessity.

    • Mr. Ray says:

Good answer. Yet, remember the guideline:
” … always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, …” 1 Peter 3:15 – ESV. Gentleness and respect. That’s key. The goal is to point them to Christ, not necessarily to “win” an argument …

  3. hardwyn says:

We all seem to know what it means for something to be true. Christianity makes truth claims, as does the poster. In fact, the poster makes a truth claim that Christianity disputes, that “a dead man has never re-risen.” Lets agree to look at the truth claims and see which ones are supported by evidence and which ones are not. I suspect the truth claims of the Asian religions the poster believes consist of values (of which we agree with to some degree) and platitudes (which are useless) and little else.

  4. Hearing Oprah question this “arrogance”, I’ve written lyrics that we are to share this good news @ http://forums.christiansongwriters.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12133, which I’ve later YouTubed @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IW56E1kxBHM. This is not just our claim that Jesus is the only way: John 14:6, NLT: Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

  5. pneumaoflife says:

It is not arrogant to say that “Jesus is the only way” if you are a christian. As a matter of fact, how could a christian say otherwise? That is what Jesus himself says in John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me.” If I am a christian, how could I believe any other thing would provide an answer other than Jesus himself? It would be contradiction of my core beliefs based solely upon his teaching! There is no other way but Jesus. I’m not trying to proselytize here; rather, I’m just stating the facts.
